Picture Perfect Competition #1: Archi-Texture

It's time once again for the bi-annual PICTURE PERFECT competition season. Each week for the next six weeks, the theme will be posted on a Wednesday and those taking part will have until the end of Friday to post their entry. The admins will then pick their 'Top Five' entries and a poll will take place to decide the winner. Full details and rules on the Picture Perfect homepage.

Our host this week is Gayle, and her theme for this week is 'Archi-Texture'. In other words the textures to be found in architecture all around us.

One of the best places I've visited for the sheer variety of architectural textures is New York. The buildings there are endlessly fascinating. My shot is of an NY building that I loved the texture of. Each window is a small black square of smoked glass, off-set by a beige frame, each one in turn inset in a square that makes up part of a grid that covers the entire face of the building. I included part of a street-light pole to try to break up the symmetry, but it seems to partly blend in!!

  6. This is an awesome shot Mitch. I have had a really close look at it and my word, the detail I saw surprised me. I even looked at it with my eyes out of focus and that was VERY interesting. One would not know it was a building by looking at the squares alone unless you told them.

    1. Thanks Shayna. Yes, I guess without being told what it is, it's not readily apparent what it is.

  7. That photo is great. Looks like a painting.

I have changed by site and Little Joe's to readers only, added the emails but must have settings wrong as no one gets a notice (hubby is a good one to check this for me). I need to go back and try to figure out what I did wrong.

  9. I'm back again to take a look at your photo. It puts me in mind of Escher and Bauhaus. Really remarkable photo. Any idea what building this is or the year this building was completed? I'm married to an architect, I can't help myself!

    1. Hi again Gayle. Sorry, I don't have any info about the building. I toured NYC both on foot and by tour-bus, and was just snapping away at anything that caught my eye. Apart from the really famous ones like the Empire State, the Chrysler and the Woolworth, I didn't get the names of any of the buildings I photographed.
