Creative Challenge #271: Perception

This is a shot I took to test visual perception. Looking at it from the distance you normally sit from your computer screen, you will see a grill-like pattern against a vaguely-coloured background.  There is actually an image behind the pattern. If you can see the image at this distance you have extremely good  visual perception. Not seeing it? Move slowly away from your computer screen.....eventually the image should appear to you. Can you tell what it is?

  1. What a challenge. This appears to be the ends of grey lead pencils - 4 of them - standing vertically together. No idea what else this could be.

    1. Hi Gemma!! It's interesting, what you thought you could see. Unfortunately, there are definately no pencils in that shot.

    1. Hi Danette!! Well, you got the camera correct, but I think maybe another cup of coffee was needed, as there definately isn't one in the shot!!! LOL.

  7. Everyone sees a camera, so it must be a camera. My kitchen (in the morning at breakfast) is not wide enough to go back further, otherwise I would have to take the computer out to the porch (too cold). anyhow brilliant idea and work.

    1. LOL. Thanks Pat. I now have this funny image in my mind of you standing at the end of the garden, shouting to Mr Swiss...."no, still can't tell what it is!!!"

  8. that's strange, I see why people say its a camera, but I also see columns underneath the 'camera' and a 'lead' coming in from the base of left hand side joining the foot of the columns. Which means, yeah I see the camera, but I see other stuff too. I didn't need to move back, being very very short sighted, I just took my glasses off. Good one Mitch :-)

    1. Hi Loretta!! Yes, it is the image of a camera. In fact it's the picture on the front of the box my camera came in. Balanced on top of that is a metallic-mesh bin that collects the paper-strips from my shredder. The photo was taken looking down at the box from an angle, through the mesh. The 'columns' and 'lead' are both light-artifacts and not part of the image. The 'lead' is light reflecting along the edge of the box. The 'columns' (I can see what you are referring to) are purely an artifact of how the light interacts with the mesh patterns (I think it's called an 'interference pattern').

  12. Interesting experiment of perception. Were you aware of the result before the shot?

    1. I'd noticed an optical effect caused by an 'interference pattern' in the metallic-mesh of the paper bin previously, so I set up an experiment to photograph through it, both against a plain background and with an image behind it. So, I knew there would be an effect, but wasn't sure how well it would reproduce in a photo until I took some shots.
